EWANGELIA - Mt 2, 13-18 (Śmierć dzieci w Betlejem)

Gdy mędrcy się oddalili, oto anioł Pański ukazał się Józefowi we śnie i rzekł: «Wstań, weź Dziecię i Jego Matkę i uchodź do Egiptu; pozostań tam, aż ci powiem; bo Herod będzie szukał Dziecięcia, aby Je zgładzić».
On wstał, wziął w nocy Dziecię i Jego Matkę i udał się do Egiptu; tam pozostał aż do śmierci Heroda. Tak miało się spełnić słowo, które Pan powiedział przez Proroka: «Z Egiptu wezwałem Syna mego».
Wtedy Herod, widząc, że go mędrcy zawiedli, wpadł w straszny gniew. Posłał oprawców do Betlejem i całej okolicy i kazał pozabijać wszystkich chłopców w wieku do lat dwóch, stosownie do czasu, o którym się dowiedział od mędrców.
Wtedy spełniły się słowa proroka Jeremiasza: «Krzyk usłyszano w Rama, płacz i jęk wielki. Rachel opłakuje swe dzieci i nie chce utulić się w żalu, bo ich już nie ma».

MEDYTACJA

Dzisiejsza Ewangelia przypomina, że narodzenie Jezusa od początku było naznaczone cierpieniem. Jezus pojawia się tam, gdzie jest wiele dobra, ale też dużo trudu, walki i niesprawiedliwości. Nie brakuje także krwawych wydarzeń, jak szaleńcza zbrodnia Heroda...

Może nam się wydawać, że Bóg patrzy bezradnie na zło, które przez grzech panoszy się po świecie. On jednak przychodzi przez Syna, który całe to zło bierze na siebie. Nie uwalnia nas od cierpienia tak, jak byśmy tego chcieli. Solidarnie z człowiekiem cierpi aż do śmierci na krzyżu. Jest przy każdym cierpiącym człowieku...

Jezus jest obok nas, niezależnie od różnych 'Herodów' i ich wysłanników, którzy mogą pojawić się w naszym życiu...

Losy Jezusa są ukazane jako wędrówka. Jezus, jak starotestamentowy Józef w poszukiwaniu braci, jest zmuszony do udania się do Egiptu. Życie Chrystusa jest interpretowane w świetle historii Izraela. Ona jest zapowiedzią losów Jezusa. On też przychodzi, aby odnaleźć braci, wyprowadzić ich z niewoli...

Ewangelista Mateusz odkrywa w losach Jezusa aktualność Pisma świętego. On jest jego wypełnieniem, a zarazem nadaje mu nową, ubogaconą interpretację...

Bóg ukazuje się Józefowi we śnie po raz kolejny. Już wcześniej, przed narodzeniem Jezusa, Józef doświadcza takiej interwencji Najwyższego. To jest szczególne doświadczenie Bożego prowadzenia, które jednak wymaga świadomej i wolnej współpracy z łaską...

Zaskakujący jest początek historii Jezusa. Narodził się w Betlejem, w grocie za miastem, wśród zwierząt i pasterzy, bo nie było dla Niego miejsca w lepszych warunkach. Jakby tego wszystkiego było mało, Święta Rodzina kolejny już raz staje w obliczu przeciwności. Jezus, Maryja i Józef stają się uchodźcami. Muszą uciekać przez groźbę śmierci z ręki Heroda...

Herod bał się utraty władzy, majątku i sławy. Straszny jest opis śmierci chłopców. Pojawia się w nas lęk przed tym, do czego zdolni są ludzie, którzy nie poznali miłości Boga lub którzy ją poznali i Go odrzucili...

"Wtedy Herod widząc, że go Mędrcy zawiedli, wpadł w straszny gniew. Posłał oprawców do Betlejem i całej okolicy i kazał pozabijać wszystkich chłopców
w wieku do lat dwóch, stosownie do czasu, o którym się dowiedział od Mędrców" (Mt 2, 16)...

Straszny jest gniew Heroda. Bezbronne dzieci ponoszą śmierć. Herod okazał się tchórzem, bojąc się o swoją pozycję i władzę, że odebrał dzieciom życie, wśród których, w jego mniemaniu, miał być Król Izraela...

Często w naszym życiu to, co niewinne i bezbronne, jest powodem naszego lęku i strachu. Wielokrotnie przecież dzieci nas zawstydzają swoją bezpośredniością
i prostolinijnością pytań i odpowiedzi. Burzy to nasz system myślenia, taki poukładany, taki nowoczesny, taki dorosły. A przecież "Kto nie przyjmie Królestwa Bożego jak dziecko, nie wejdzie do niego" (Mk 10, 16)...

Śmierć dzieci to tragiczne wydarzenie, które dotknęło mieszkańców Betlejem w związku z działalnością despotycznego króla Heroda. Władca widział wokół siebie potencjalnych wrogów i czuł zagrożenie dla sprawowanej dla siebie władzy. Stąd paranoiczny lęk nawet przed dziećmi, których kazał wymordować, chciał bowiem mieć władzę i kontrolę nad innymi...

Strata niewinnego dziecka wiąże się z ogromnym bólem. Ból serca jest w stanie ukoić jedynie Bóg. On w swoim Synu stał się towarzyszem ludzkiej historii, wlewając w zbolałe serca nadzieję nowego życia. I dając nam Matkę nadziei, która 'sercem ogarnia każdego z nas' i 'jest z nami w każdy czas'...

"Proszę Pana Jezusa, aby z Jego Najświętszego Serca wypłynęły dla nas wszystkich strumienie wody żywej, aby zagoić rany, które sobie zadajemy, aby umocnić naszą zdolność kochania i służenia, aby pobudzać nas do nauki wspólnego podążania ku światu sprawiedliwemu, solidarnemu i braterskiemu" (Papież Franciszek)...

Bóg wskazuje rozwiązania. Komunikuje się z człowiekiem na każdej możliwej płaszczyźnie. Uprzedza sytuacje, nie zastrasza, ale przedstawia. Dla Niego nie ma krain przeklętych, miejsc skreślonych z listy, doświadczeń determinujących myślenie i naznaczających na wieki. Bóg ocala człowieka, odnawia świat, nadaje nowość każdej chwili...

Bóg wpisuje swoje działania w historię jako kolejne i jako przywołujące miłość, którą ma do człowieka. Bóg nie niszczy kart, nie odcina Starego Testamentu od Nowego. On przesuwa dalej czas, wydarzenia i nas. Tylko patrzmy na Niego i wychwalajmy Jego działanie...

...Jezu, proszę o pełne ufności oddanie się Bogu w chwilach kryzysów... Proszę o łaskę zaufania oraz siłę, by wytrwać przy Tobie, niezależnie od sytuacji... Proszę o łaskę rozeznania i posłuszeństwa z pokorą, jak Józef... Dziękuję za Twoją solidarność z losem braci...

GOSPEL - Mt 2, 13-18 (Death of the Children in Bethlehem)

When the wise men had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt; stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him."
He arose, took the Child and His mother by night, and departed for Egypt; and there he remained until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my Son."
When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, he was filled with great anger. He sent executioners to Bethlehem and all the surrounding area and gave orders to kill all the male children two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men. Then the words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: "A cry was heard in Ramah, weeping and great groaning. Rachel weeps for her children and refuses to be comforted in her grief, because they are no more".

MEDITATION

Today's Gospel reminds us that the birth of Jesus was marked by suffering from the beginning. Jesus appears where there is much good, but also much hardship, struggle and injustice. There is also no shortage of bloody events, such as Herod's mad crime...

It may seem to us that God looks helplessly at the evil that is rampant in the world through sin. However, he comes through his Son, who takes all this evil upon himself. He does not free us from suffering as we would like. In solidarity with man, he suffers until his death on the cross. He is with every suffering person...

Jesus is next to us, regardless of the various 'Herods' and their envoys who may appear in our lives...

The fate of Jesus is presented as a journey. Jesus, like the Old Testament Joseph in search of his brothers, is forced to go to Egypt. The life of Christ is interpreted in the light of the history of Israel. It is a foreshadowing of the fate of Jesus. He also comes to find his brothers, to lead them out of slavery...

The evangelist Matthew discovers the relevance of the Holy Scripture in the fate of Jesus. He is its fulfillment, and at the same time gives it a new, enriched interpretation...

God appears to Joseph in a dream once again. Earlier, before Jesus was born, Joseph experienced such an intervention from the Most High. This is a special experience of God's guidance, which, however, requires conscious and free cooperation with grace...

The beginning of the story of Jesus is surprising. He was born in Bethlehem, in a cave outside the city, among animals and shepherds, because there was no place for Him in better conditions. As if all this were not enough, the Holy Family once again faces adversity. Jesus, Mary and Joseph become refugees. They have to flee because of the threat of death at Herod's hands...

Herod was afraid of losing his power, wealth and fame. The description of the deaths of the boys is terrible. We are filled with fear of what people are capable of who have not known the love of God or who have known it and rejected Him...

"When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the Magi, he was furious. He sent executioners to Bethlehem and all the surrounding area and gave orders to kill all the boys two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi" (Mt 2:16)...

Herod's anger is terrible. Defenseless children die. Herod proved to be a coward, fearing for his position and power, that he took the lives of children, among whom, in his opinion, was to be the King of Israel...

Often in our lives, what is innocent and defenseless is the reason for our fear and anxiety. Many times, children embarrass us with their directness and straightforwardness in their questions and answers. It destroys our system of thinking, so organized, so modern, so adult. And yet, "Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it" (Mark 10:16)...

The death of children is a tragic event that affected the inhabitants of Bethlehem in connection with the activities of the despotic king Herod. The ruler saw potential enemies around him and felt a threat to the power he exercised. Hence the paranoid fear even of children, whom he ordered to be murdered, because he wanted to have power and control over others...

The loss of an innocent child is associated with great pain. Only God can soothe the pain of the heart. In his Son, He became a companion in human history, pouring hope of new life into the aching hearts. And giving us the Mother of hope, who 'embraces each one of us with her heart' and 'is with us at all times'...

"I pray the Lord Jesus that from his Most Sacred Heart may flow for us all streams of living water, to heal the wounds we inflict on ourselves, to strengthen our capacity to love and serve, to encourage us to learn to walk together towards a just, solidary and fraternal world" (Pope Francis)...

God indicates solutions. He communicates with man on every possible level. He anticipates situations, does not intimidate, but presents. For Him, there are no cursed lands, places crossed off the list, experiences that determine thinking and mark for eternity. God saves man, renews the world, gives newness to every moment...

God inscribes his actions in history as successive and as evoking the love he has for man. God does not destroy pages, does not cut off the Old Testament from the New. He moves time, events and us further. Let us only look at Him and praise His action...

...Jesus, I ask for full trusting surrender to God in moments of crisis... I ask for the grace of trust and the strength to persevere with You, regardless of the situation... I ask for the grace of discernment and obedience with humility, like Joseph... Thank you for your solidarity with the fate of my brothers...
