EWANGELIA - Łk 1, 5-25 (Archanioł Gabriel zapowiada narodzenie Jana Chrzciciela)

Za czasów Heroda, króla Judei, żył pewien kapłan, imieniem Zachariasz, z oddziału Abiasza. Miał on żonę z rodu Aarona, a na imię było jej Elżbieta. Oboje byli sprawiedliwi wobec Boga i postępowali nienagannie według wszystkich przykazań i przepisów Pańskich. Nie mieli jednak dziecka, ponieważ Elżbieta była niepłodna; oboje zaś już posunęli się w latach.
Kiedy Zachariasz według wyznaczonej dla swego oddziału kolei pełnił służbę kapłańską przed Bogiem, jemu zgodnie ze zwyczajem kapłańskim przypadł
w udziale los, żeby wejść do przybytku Pańskiego i złożyć ofiarę kadzenia. A cały lud modlił się na zewnątrz w czasie ofiary kadzenia.
Wtedy ukazał mu się anioł Pański, stojący po prawej stronie ołtarza kadzenia. Przeraził się na ten widok Zachariasz i strach padł na niego. Lecz anioł rzekł do niego: «Nie bój się, Zachariaszu! Twoja prośba została wysłuchana: żona twoja, Elżbieta, urodzi ci syna i nadasz mu imię Jan. Będzie to dla ciebie radość i wesele; i wielu cieszyć się będzie z jego narodzin. Będzie bowiem wielki w oczach Pana; wina i sycery pić nie będzie i już w łonie matki napełniony zostanie Duchem Świętym. Wielu spośród synów Izraela nawróci do Pana, ich Boga; on sam pójdzie przed Nim w duchu i z mocą Eliasza, żeby serca ojców nakłonić ku dzieciom, a nieposłusznych do rozwagi sprawiedliwych, by przygotować Panu lud doskonały». Na to rzekł Zachariasz do Anioła: «Po czym to poznam? Bo sam jestem już stary i moja żona jest w podeszłym wieku».
Odpowiedział mu Anioł: «Ja jestem Gabriel, stojący przed Bogiem. I zostałem posłany, aby mówić z tobą i oznajmić ci tę radosną nowinę. A oto będziesz niemy i nie będziesz mógł mówić aż do dnia, w którym się to stanie, bo nie uwierzyłeś moim słowom, które się spełnią w swoim czasie».
Lud tymczasem czekał na Zachariasza i dziwił się, że tak długo zatrzymuje się w przybytku. Kiedy wyszedł, nie mógł do nich mówić, zrozumieli więc, że miał widzenie w przybytku. On zaś dawał im znaki i pozostał niemy.
A gdy upłynęły dni jego posługi kapłańskiej, powrócił do swego domu. Potem żona jego, Elżbieta, poczęła i kryła się z tym przez pięć miesięcy, mówiąc: «Tak uczynił mi Pan wówczas, kiedy wejrzał łaskawie, by zdjąć ze mnie hańbę wśród ludzi».

MEDYTACJA

W życiu Zachariasza spełnia się to, co było pragnieniem jego serca. Mimo to doświadcza lęku i pełen jest obaw. Potrzebował znaku, aby uwierzyć, że to, co się dzieje, pochodzi od Boga. Potrzebował czasu, by zrozumieć znak...

Postać Zachariasza to przykład, że w naszej wierze może być wiele pytań i niepewności. Bóg jest cierpliwy wobec niego i wobec nas...

Zachariasz nie przepraszał za to, że nie wierzył. W końcu był na odpowiednim miejscu: w najświętszym domu Pana, wszędzie palący dym kadzielny. Była to chwila łaski w świętych pomieszczeniach. Nawet anioł mu się okazał...

Jeśli jakiś człowiek został przygotowany na specjalne przesłanie, to był to Zachariasz. Mimo to wątpi. Nie wierzy. On przecież wszystkie przykazania Boże wypełniał, a wbrew temu jego zaufanie nie zaprowadziło go w pewnym momencie do żywej wiary. Zastanówmy się, czy idziemy do tej samej pułapki: modlimy się dużo, ale reagujemy sceptycznie, jeśli Bóg ma wyjątkowe zadanie dla nas...

Ewangelista Łukasz pisze swoją Ewangelię dla pogan nawróconych na chrześcijaństwo. Oni nie mają kontekstu historycznego i religijnego Żydów. Nie znają historii zbawienia. Nie zrozumieliby też bez niej Jezusa, który był obietnicą złożoną Izraelowi...

Postacie Elżbiety i Zachariasza (podeszli w latach, bezdzietni, z synem, który został im dany) ukazują podstawowe cechy działania Boga. Syntezą tej katechezy jest fundamentalna prawda wiary: Bóg wypełnia obietnice, które człowiek uważa za niemożliwe do realizacji w konkretnej historii naszego życia. Wszystko ma
w niej swoje miejsce i wyjaśnienie...

Obietnice Boga są zawsze większe od naszych wyobrażeń. Możemy odpowiedzieć na nie tylko wiarą, która ufa Bogu. Nasze umiejętności czy możliwości nie wystarczą, choć trzeba uznać ograniczenia i je przezwyciężać...

Kolejne zdarzenie opisane w dzisiejszej Ewangelii, a mające miejsce przed narodzinami Jezusa w Betlejem, ma nas przygotować do świętowania najważniejszych urodzin w historii świata...

Bóg zaskakuje. Elżbieta i Zachariasz byli bezdzietni. Byli w podeszłym wieku, a my w Ewangelii czytamy o zwiastowaniu Zachariaszowi, że zostanie ojcem...

Bóg przychodzi także do ludzi zepchniętych przez innych na margines, do kogoś, kto dawno przekreślił się i zakłada, że niczego dobrego już nie zrealizuje i nie przeżyje. Jakby chciał powiedzieć, że On jest dla wszystkich, że nikim nie gardzi i nikogo nie przekreśla i dla każdego ma dobry plan...

...Jezu, proszę o zdolność rozpoznawania Bożych dzieł w moim życiu... Proszę o łaskę wiary w obietnice Boże... Dziękuję za to, że Bóg kieruje moją osobistą historią...

GOSPEL - Lk 1, 5-25 (Archangel Gabriel announces the birth of John the Baptist)

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. He had a wife of the descendants of Aaron,
and her name was Elizabeth. Both were righteous before God and walked blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren; and both were advanced in years.
While Zechariah was performing the priestly duties before God according to the order appointed for his division, it fell to him, according to the custom
of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord to offer incense. And all the people were praying outside at the time of the incense offering.
And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw it, he was terrified, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. This will be joy and gladness for you, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he will drink no wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people prepared for the Lord." Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How will I know this? For I am an old man myself, and my wife is well advanced in years." The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel who stands before God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled
in their time.'
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and were amazed that he stayed so long in the tabernacle. When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision in the tabernacle. And he gave them signs and remained silent.
And when the days of his priestly ministry were completed, he returned to his home. Afterward, his wife Elizabeth conceived and hid herself for five months, saying, 'This is what the Lord did to me when he looked favorably on me to take away my reproach among men.'

MEDITATION

In Zechariah's life, the desire of his heart is being fulfilled. Despite this, he experiences fear and is full of anxiety. He needed a sign to believe that what was happening was from God. He needed time to understand the sign...

The figure of Zechariah is an example of the many questions and uncertainties that can arise in our faith. God is patient with him and with us...

Zechariah did not apologize for not believing. After all, he was in the right place: in the most holy house of the Lord, with incense burning everywhere. It was
a moment of grace in the holy chambers. Even an angel appeared to him...

If any man was prepared for a special message, it was Zechariah. Despite this, he doubts. He does not believe. After all, he fulfilled all of God's commandments, and despite this, his trust did not lead him to a living faith at some point. Let us consider whether we fall into the same trap: we pray a lot, but react skeptically if God has a special task for us...

The evangelist Luke writes his Gospel for pagan converts to Christianity. They do not have the historical and religious context of the Jews. They do not know the history of salvation. They would not have understood Jesus without it, who was the promise made to Israel...

The figures of Elizabeth and Zechariah (advanced in years, childless, with a son who was given to them) show the basic features of God's action. The synthesis of this catechesis is the fundamental truth of faith: God fulfills promises that man considers impossible to fulfill in the specific history of our lives. Everything has its place and explanation in it...

God's promises are always greater than our imaginations. We can respond to them only with faith that trusts in God. Our skills or possibilities are not enough, although we must acknowledge our limitations and overcome them...

The next event described in today's Gospel, which took place before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, is to prepare us to celebrate the most important birthday in the history of the world...

God surprises. Elizabeth and Zechariah were childless. They were elderly, and in the Gospel we read about the announcement to Zechariah that he would become a father...

God also comes to people pushed to the margins by others, to someone who has long since crossed himself out and assumes that he will no longer achieve anything good and will not experience anything. As if he wanted to say that He is for everyone, that He does not despise anyone or cross anyone out and has
a good plan for everyone...

...Jesus, I ask for the ability to recognize God's works in my life... I ask for the grace of faith in God's promises... I thank God for guiding my personal history...
